No doubt all of you have been following the tragedy and devastation that has occurred in Christchurch.  For those of you who have family and friends in Christchurch, we hope everyone is okay and our thoughts and hearts are with you all.

Over the past couple of days since the quake, there has been continual updating of information.  We wanted to give you a summary of the best places to seek accurate information and how to help.

If you know of any information you think other Kiwis in LA members would appreciate, please email us at info@kiwisinla.com or post on our Facebook page.

Places for the Latest Information
The best and most accurate official sites for information are the Ministry of Civil Defence www.civildefence.govt.nz and Canterbury Earthquake www.canterburyearthquake.org.nz, a site set up by Environment Canterbury for the September 2010 earthquake and reactivated for the February 2011 quake.  For the New Zealand Government’s response to the earthquake visit www.beehive.govt.nz

Of course, Stuff, the Herald, TVNZ and TV3 all have blanket coverage as things continue to unfold, and Kea New Zealand www.keanewzealand.com has been an invaluable place to go for Kiwis overseas.

Twitter and Facebook are great for getting in touch with people and for monitoring news on the ground.

How To Help

People wanting to help and support those in Christchurch are being asked to contribute financially only – no donations of goods or services are requested at this time.

Along with many Kiwi groups and individuals around the world, Kiwis in LA is supporting the rescue and recovery effort in Christchurch.  On behalf of all the members of Kiwis in LA, we are making a $250.00 donation to the Christchurch Mayor’s Fund.  We hope you agree that this donation, while small, will be of some support to those who are going through such a difficult time.

If you would like to make your own personal donation in addition to that being made by Kiwis in LA, there are a number of officially sanctioned ways to donate.  People are being encouraged to donate using one of several bank accounts set up specifically for this purpose.

You can donate to the Red Cross online at www.redcross.org.nz/donate or by phone at +64 4 471 8250.

The Christchurch Mayoral Fund will accept donations to Christchurch citizens at the following BNZ bank account: 02-0800-0849758-000 (NOTE: this account number was updated on February 24).
